  5.     The U.S. is keen on boosting exports to Japan, but Ronald
  6. Hoffman may have gone too far. Federal agents arrested the
  7. Beverly Hills executive on June 14 for illegally exporting
  8. software designed for the Strategic Defense Initiative, or Star
  9. Wars. Five Japanese companies, including Nissan Motor and
  10. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, have acknowledged buying the
  11. software, called Contam. Estimated prices: $150,000 to
  12. $450,000. Hoffman, 51, allegedly obtained the technology,
  13. designed for identifying missiles by their exhaust plumes,
  14. while working as an engineer on a Star Wars project in Los
  15. Angeles. If convicted, he faces a $1 million fine and ten years
  16. in prison. All the Japanese firms have denied knowing that
  17. Hoffman had no export license for the software.
